These are the period of Dakshinayanam( The movement of Sun towards South which began in the month of Karkitaka. The Dakshinayanam period is for six month (up to Makaram) and is treated as the night time of Devas. Hence the month of Thulam is the Mid night time. That is the importance of the Deepavali.
